Foreign Minister Rana meets OHCHR's Türk in Geneva

Kathmandu, February 26 — Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba met with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, in Geneva.

Minister Dr. Rana, who is in Geneva for the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council, held the meeting on the sidelines of the session on Wednesday.

During the meeting, Dr. Rana emphasized that Nepal is a global example in the protection and promotion of human rights, despite limited resources.

She noted that Nepal remains committed to safeguarding and advancing human rights.

She also shared that Nepal's current constitution guarantees fundamental rights, including political, economic, social, and cultural rights.

The government, she added, is fully committed to democratic values, the rule of law, and judicial independence.

Dr. Rana also updated the High Commissioner on the government's progress in completing peace process tasks, including the enactment of laws related to transitional justice, and reaffirmed Nepal's commitment to resolving transitional justice issues swiftly.

The meeting was attended by Krishna Prasad Dhakal, Head of the UN Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ram Prasad Subedi, Nepal's Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, and Rajendra Thapa, Head of the Human Rights and International Treaties Section at the Prime Minister's Office.
