Situation at KIIT returns to normal, Nepali students reluctant to return

Kathmandu, February 19 — The situation at KIIT University in Odisha, India, has been returning to normal following the mysterious death of Nepali student, Prakriti Lamsal, which had caused tensions at the university.
According to students, the environment at the university has now stabilized, although many Nepali students have not yet returned to the campus.
One Nepali student mentioned that the situation is improving, but only about 30 to 35 students have returned to the hostel.
Around 1,160 Nepali students were studying at the university, but most have not returned.
Some students have traveled to Nepal via Raxaul, or are staying at hotels or relatives' homes in India.
Despite the situation normalizing, students still feel anxious.
Hostel staff have been calling students to return, but many are still hesitant due to the fear of what might happen.
The university held a memorial service on Tuesday for Prakriti Lamsal, attended by senior university officials.
After the service, the university expressed deep condolences on social media, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring justice and support for her family, friends, and the student community.
Prakriti, who tragically took her life on February 16 after an alleged incident of abuse by a male student, was found hanging in her hostel room by other students who broke down the door.
Following her death and protests from Nepali students, the university instructed Nepali students to return to Nepal, which led to further demonstrations.
In response, the university suspended and dismissed five staff members.
Indian media also reported that Advik Srivastava, the male student accused of the abuse, has been arrested and investigations are ongoing.
