Kathmandu, February 19 — President Ramchandra Paudel has expressed confidence that democracy will further strengthen broad national unity along with social justice, equality, social harmony, and prosperity. On the occasion of National Democracy Day, 2081, he extended his best wishes and stated that democracy has established the belief that the people are the ultimate source of state power.
"The belief that the sovereignty of the country must lie with the people has been established through the people's struggle and the sacrifice of martyrs. Therefore, this day is marked as a glorious and unforgettable day in Nepal's history," said President Paudel in his greetings. "Federal democratic republic is an important achievement that we Nepalis have gained through a struggle spanning more than seven decades. We were able to establish the federal democratic republic based on the revolution of 2007 BS."
President Paudel noted that Nepal's Constitution has adopted the system of federal democratic republic and has aimed to build a socialism-oriented economy based on justice and equality. He mentioned, "Through democratic elections, representatives have been chosen, and now governments have been formed at all three levels as per the Constitution. These are certainly great and historic achievements for us. I believe our journey towards a prosperous future has begun on the foundation of these achievements."
President Paudel also paid heartfelt tribute to all known and unknown martyrs who sacrificed their precious lives in the various struggles for the establishment of democracy in the country and expressed respect and gratitude to all the elders who guided the movement.
The President expressed his expectation that all representatives, political parties, and all state organs would be motivated to implement constitutional values and principles. He also honored everyone who contributed to Nepal's sovereignty, territorial integrity, national interest, self-respect, and democracy, and hoped that National Democracy Day would help achieve the national goals of sustainable peace, good governance, development, and prosperity.
Every year, Democracy Day is observed on the 7th of Falgun in the Nepali calendar to honor the historic achievement of securing human rights and political freedom, which resulted from the successful 2007 revolution and the courageous struggle against autocracy.
