Congress, UML attempting to dismantle constitution: Prachanda

Dolakha, February 14 — The Chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Center), Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, has accused the Nepali Congress and CPN (UML) leadership of focusing not on amending the constitution but on undermining it and curbing the rights of the people.
Addressing the inauguration of the 30th People’s War Day and the third conference of the Maoist Centre in Jiri Municipality, Dolakha, Prachanda expressed his views.
He claimed that a section of Congress and UML leadership has been working against the constitution, particularly targeting the rights granted to marginalized communities like women, Dalits, indigenous groups, Madheshis, Muslims, and Tharus.
According to Prachanda, these groups see the rights of oppressed communities as excessive and, rather than seeking constitutional amendments, they are looking for any pretext to dismantle the constitution.
He reminded the audience of past incidents, including the unconstitutional dissolution of Parliament, which he attributed to such efforts.
He further emphasized that when Parliament was dissolved previously, millions of people had taken to the streets to safeguard the constitution, and their struggle had led to the failure of attempts to undermine it.
Prachanda reiterated that while reactionary forces are still trying to dismantle the constitution, the Maoist Center aims to strengthen it, adding more rights and ensuring the protection of people’s rights.
Prachanda also spoke about his party’s future political agenda, highlighting the push for a directly elected executive president and a fully proportional election system as the next steps in advancing Nepal's democratic framework.
