Maoist chief whip Pandey hits back at PM Oli’s violence remarks

Kathmandu, January 31 — Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s comment about the 1990s being the "decade of violence" was met with a response from the main opposition party, the CPN (Maoist Centre), through its Chief Whip, Hitaraj Pandey.

Speaking in the House of Representatives session at the Parliament building in New Baneshwor on Friday, Oli had emphasized that while the 1990s might have been a decade of violence, the 2020s should be focused on as the "decade of prosperity."

Pandey, responding to Oli, said, "The Prime Minister talked about the 1990s. It was the People's Liberation Army that brought about the republic by carrying guns on their shoulders. This cannot be undermined. It is on the foundation of the Maoist people's war that Nepal established a federal republic."

Pandey further stated that his party would continue to constructively oppose and support the government based on its merits and faults.

He accused the government of failing to perform well on issues of good governance, social justice, prosperity, and livelihoods.

He also pointed out that the government had shown little interest in concluding the peace process and raised questions about the government's failure to address constitutional amendments.
