Power cuts in industrial sector expected during peak hours

Kathmandu, December 17 — The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has announced that until the re-operation of 456 MW Upper Tamakoshi hydropower plant , there will be some power cuts in the industrial sector during peak evening hours due to higher electricity demand.

With the onset of winter, water levels in rivers have decreased, leading to a reduction in the generation capacity of domestic river-based hydropower plants by one-third.

As Nepal is unable to import electricity from India during peak times to meet the internal demand, the NEA has stated that power cuts in the industrial sector will be necessary.

NEA Executive Director Kulman Ghising explained that the largest operational hydropower project, the 456 MW Upper Tamakoshi, is not generating power, causing difficulties in managing electricity during the winter peak period.

He clarified that there will be no power cuts for customers other than the industrial sector.
