Women-friendly policies for safe productive in-use of energy stressed

 

 

Kathmandu – Various speakers have stressed the need for making women-friendly policies for the safe productive in-use of energy. 
They blamed lack of meaningful participation of women in energy sector for their poor financial condition. 
They expressed their view at an International Workshop on Gender and Energy, organised today in the Capital jointly by Nepal Energy Foundation, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), India, and Women's Network for Energy and Environment (WoNEE). 
On the occasion, Executive Director of the APEC, Ram Prasad Dhital, said that it was necessary to create public awareness of opportunities for women to become economically capable through the use of modern energy, saying women of remote areas are still depending on traditional energy. 


Likewise, Managing Director of the Nepal Energy Foundation, Dilli Prasad Ghimire, said that Nepal is yet to have women-friendly policies due to women being denied their participation in every sector of energy. 
Kala Timalsina, Coordinator of WoNEE, said, "Women use energy. But they are unknown about basic knowledge of electrical appliances and their safety." 


Timalsina informed said that awareness programmes have been organised 17 districts in collaboration with concerned bodies. 
Likewise, Bigsna Gill of TREI, pointed out backwardness of women in various fields including industry and other productive areas despite their connection with the globe through the use of mobile, TV and computer in recent period.
