Chief Justice Raut calls Judicial Council meeting

Kathmandu, November 20 — Chief Justice Prakashman Singh Raut has called a meeting of the Judicial Council. The meeting is scheduled to take place at 5 PM this evening.  

The meeting has been called to discuss the appointment and recommendation of four judges for the Supreme Court (SC) and 17 judges for the High Courts, which are currently vacant.

According to a source in the Judicial Council, this is the second formal meeting under Chief Justice Raut's leadership. Previously, informal discussions had taken place, but today is the first formal meeting, as confirmed by a Council member.  

Currently, the Supreme Court has 17 sitting judges, although the constitution states that there will be 21 permanent judges in the Supreme Court. The SC has been facing a shortage of judges for a long time.

Previously, there were six vacant positions, but the number has been reduced to four following the appointment of two judges after parliamentary hearings.
