Minister Yadav warns of severe water crisis in Tarai-Madhesh

Kathmandu, November 19 — Minister for Water Supply, Pradeep Yadav, has said the Tarai-Madhesh region is likely to grapple with a severe water crisis due to the impact of climate change and the encroachment on the Chure region.     

In his address to a programme organised here on Tuesday, marking the 53rd establishment day of the Department of Water Supply and Sewerage Management (DWSSM), the Minister expressed his concern over the depleting water resources in the Tarai-Madhesh. He warned that the region may face an insolvable water shortage issue if the situation is not addressed durably.     

Yadav took time to say that the incessant rains on September 27-28 damaged various water projects, posing more challenges to the Ministry in the management of water supply. He also urged the authorities concerned to restore damaged water pipes of the Melamchi Drinking Water Project.     

According to Ministry Secretary Engineer Pramiladevi Shakya Bajracharya, the monsoon rains this year inflicted severe damage on the area of water supplies and efforts are underway to mend damaged structures.     

Department Director General Engineer Ram Kumar Shrestha said despite limited sources, the Department is making its maximum efforts for the management of water supplies.
