Flower farmers in Kathmandu prepare for Tihar celebrations (photos)
Kathmandu, October 29 — With the onset of Yamapanchak today, marigold farmers in the Kallabari area of Kathmandu are busy collecting flowers and making garlands. The Ichangu and Ramkot areas are now adorned with blooming marigolds, Godawari flowers, and other blossoms, making the fields look beautiful. Farmers have been busy in their fields since early morning, picking flowers.
Kallabari, known as a hub for flower cultivation in the Kathmandu Valley, sees both commercial transactions and consumers visiting farms to purchase flowers directly. The flowers produced here are primarily consumed within the Kathmandu Valley.
During festivals, the farmers' activity in the flower business significantly increases. This year, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City has organized the sale and distribution of domestically produced flowers at 46 locations within the metropolitan area to streamline the process.
Mayor Balen Shah announced on Facebook that the sale of plastic flowers and decorative materials has been restricted to promote the trade of locally produced flowers.
"Last year, we also designated sales locations for flowers at Bhrikuti Mandap, Tinkune, Handigaun, and Balaju Bishnumati Corridor. The Metropolitan Police Force provided transport to these areas. Based on last year's experiences and practices, we aim to facilitate flower-selling farmers this year. Arrangements have been made at malls, parks, party palaces, and centers. Domestic flower-selling farmers can choose a convenient location from those designated by the Metropolitan City for sales. For assistance, contact numbers and facilitation from the Metropolitan Police Force will also be available," Balen wrote in his post.
