Morang SP Karki transferred amid cryptocurrency controversy

Kathmandu, October 21 — SP Nabaraj Karki of the Morang District Police Office is embroiled in financial irregularities. Following the financial dispute, the police headquarters has recalled him and sent SP Narayan Prasad Chimoriya to Morang.

Karki, who went to Morang on Februray 14 was transferred on October 18. He is accused of accepting money from a cryptocurrency trader. Allegedly, Karki received 2.2 million Nepali Rupees on the condition that he would not arrest the cryptocurrency trader or file a case against him.

According to initial investigations conducted by the Provincial Police Office, Karki sent Inspector Bikram Bahadur Bhattarai, who works in the District Police Office, to receive the money from the cryptocurrency trader. Inspector Bhattarai, who was under surveillance for the investigation, has provided a "testimony statement" stating that he received the money and handed it over to Karki.

To investigate the incident, a committee has been formed under the leadership of SSP Bhim Bahadur Dahal of the Provincial Police Office, as stated by DIG Chandra Kuber Khapung of Koshi Province. Khapung mentioned, "The investigation committee is at work; we will know the facts only after the report is submitted."

For the investigation, Inspector Bikram Bahadur Bhattarai, Head Constable Rajkumar Shrestha, Assistant Head Constable Saroj Shrestha, and Head Constable Khagendra Raut from the Belauri Area Police Office have been summoned to the Provincial Police Office.

300,000 recovered

Officials involved in the investigation have stated that the money received from the cryptocurrency trader was taken to Karki's home in Udayapur. After the incident became public, Karki was found to have given 300,000 Nepali Rupees to an intermediary under the condition of keeping it secret. According to police sources, the investigation committee has recovered this amount.

After the investigation against him began, Karki reportedly returned the money to the cryptocurrency trader, as disclosed by an officer involved in the Provincial Police Office.
