MPs snub responsibilities: Flee the House post-Prachanda speech

Kathmandu, August 27 — The primary duty of Members of Parliament (MPs) is to attend House sessions and parliamentary committees regularly and to perform their roles in accordance with the needs and concerns of the people.

MPs serve as a bridge between the public and the government, and they are responsible for raising issues that affect the general population. Their role involves being actively engaged in parliamentary discussions and representing their constituents' interests.

However, MPs often neglect these responsibilities. They frequently attend sessions and vote but fail to fulfill their broader duties. This pattern of behavior has drawn criticism.

A recent example of this occurred during Tuesday’s House of Representatives meeting. While former Prime Minister and CPN-Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, also known as Prachanda, was speaking, most MPs were present. However, once Prachanda finished his speech, many MPs exited the meeting, leaving only a few to remain and listen to subsequent discussions.
