Nepal and India ink agreement to trade 10,000 megawatts of electricity

KATHMANDU: In a groundbreaking development, Nepal and India have officially signed an agreement to facilitate the trading of 10,000 megawatts of electricity. The momentous accord was formalized at an event hosted by the Ministry of Energy, Water Resource, and Irrigation.

Energy Secretary Gopal Prasad Sigdel, representing Nepal, and his Indian counterpart Pankaj Agrawal put pen to paper, solidifying a long-term commitment to power exchange between the two nations.

This agreement follows the earlier announcement by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing India's intent to purchase 10,000 megawatts of electricity over the next ten years. Presently, Nepal is already exporting 650 megawatts of electricity to India.

The signed agreement marks a significant step towards strengthening energy ties between Nepal and India, fostering cooperation in the crucial realm of power generation and distribution.
