Arsenal, Man City turn on style as Newcastle take revenge on Man United
LONDON, April 3: Arsenal remain top of the Premier League with an 8-point lead over Manchester City after a weekend in which both sides enjoyed convincing wins.
Arsenal kept their cool after Manchester City had started the weekend with a 4-1 win at home to Liverpool by beating Leeds United by the same score.
Fit-again, Gabriel Jesus scored twice (the first from the penalty spot), while Ben White and Granit Xhaka completed the scoring as Mikel Arteta's side gave one of their best displays of the season.
Manchester City began the weekend with a 4-1 win at home to Liverpool. Although Pep Guardiola's side fell behind to Mohamed Salah's 17th-minute goal, Julian Alvarez, starting instead of the injured Erling Haaland, leveled 10 minutes later.
Alverez was involved in both Kevin de Bruyne's 46th-minute strike that put City ahead and in Ilkay Gundogan's goal that made it 3-1 in the 53rd minute.
The impressive Jack Grealish got the goal he deserved in the 76th minute to make it 4-1 after exchanging passes with De Bruyne.
Newcastle United gained some revenge for their Carabao Cup defeat to Manchester United last month with a 2-0 win at St James' Park that lifts them momentarily into third place in the league.
Newcastle produced an impressive display and Joe Willock's 65th-minute header and an 88th-minute strike from Callum Wilson gave them all three points against a rival that looked flat after the international break.
The result puts the pressure on Tottenham, who play away to Everton on Monday night.
The pressure is also back on Chelsea after goals from Ollie Watkins and John McGinn gave Aston Villa a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge.
Roy Hodgson enjoyed a winning return as coach to Crystal Palace as the team defeated Leicester City 2-1.
Goals from Marcus Tavernier and Dominic Solanke helped Bournemouth come back from conceding an Andreas Pereira goal against Fulham to take three big points in their battle against relegation.
On Sunday, Naif Aguerd's powerful 25th-minute header gave West Ham a vital 1-0 win at home to bottom-of-the-table Southampton.
Daniel Podence scored a late equalizer to give Wolves a 1-1 draw away to Nottingham Forest, who had looked set for three points after a first-half strike from Brennan Johnson.
Brighton and Brentford shared six goals in a 3-3 thriller which saw Brighton come back three times.
