New local elections date announced in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO, March 8: The Election Commission of Sri Lanka has announced that April 25 is the appropriate date for local council elections.

The commission also informed the Regional Election Officer that the local elections could not be held on March 9 due to unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances.

The provincial election officials had earlier this year announced that the local elections would be held on March 9, which the government delayed citing insufficient funds.

Sri Lanka holds elections for local government bodies once every four years, and the postponed local elections were scheduled for 2022.
