Number of countries with diplomatic relations with Nepal reaches 178

KATHMANDU, Feb. 17: Diplomatic relations have been established between Nepal and the Republic of Malawi. With this, the number of countries with which Nepal has diplomatic relations has reached 178. Amrit Bahadur Rai, Permanent Representative/ Ambassador of Nepal to the United Nations, and Agnes Marie Chimbiri-Molande, Permanent Representative/Ambassador of the Republic of Malawi to the United Nations, signed a joint statement on Thursday in a brief ceremony at the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations, New York.
According to the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations, the two ambassadors signed a joint letter informing the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, about the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. On that occasion, the two ambassadors deliberated on various issues of common interest to strengthen bilateral cooperation on national and international platforms. They also discussed the role of least-developed countries as a group in various international forums including the United Nations for the protection and promotion of the group's common interests. Nepal is taking over the role of chairperson of the LDC's Global Coordination Bureau from Malawi next month.
Located in southern Africa, Malawi is also a landlocked country, sharing borders with Mozambique, Zambia, and Tanzania. The total area of Malawi, which has a population of about 20 million, is 184,484. Both Nepal and Malawi are members of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), Group of 77, Least Developed Countries (LDCs), and Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs).
