PM instructs not to implement the MDMS system immediately
KATHMANDU, Dec. 30: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' has instructed not to implement the Mobile Device Management System (MDMS) system immediately. According to sources from Nepal Telecommunication Authority, the instruction was given by the Prime Minister's Office.
Nepal Telecommunication Authority had planned to fully implement the MDMS system from Friday 15th of Push. When the MDMS system was about to be implemented to prevent the use of mobile phones that are not registered in the customs office of Nepal, there was widespread opposition to it.
People protested when the MDMS system was about to start, as people who returned from working abroad had to pay taxes and customs duties on the mobile phones they brought to Nepal for their family members.
Prime Minister Dahal has instructed the authorities not to implement the MDMS system for the time being, after widespread protests from the public and the hashtag campaign of no remittances from abroad. After receiving the instructions from the Prime Minister's Office, the authority has postponed the implementation of the MDMS system.
It was arranged that a declaration form must be obtained from the customs to charge up to 18 percent tax on the price purchased abroad or the price fixed at the customs point, to which there was a huge protest. The government backtracked on its decision after the protests.
