Participation of people's representatives on waste management stressed

Kathmandu - Various speakers have stressed the need of engaging elected people's representatives while involving private sector in waste management of Kathmandu Valley. 

At a programme organized here today by the Investment Board, people's representatives pointed out the need to involve the concerned stakeholders including chief, deputy chief and executive officer of local levels of Kathmandu district in integrated waste management of the Valley. 

On the occasion, Deputy Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolis Hari Prabha Khadgi underlined urgency of capitalizing the strengths of private sector towards utilizing wastes as raw material for industry operation and taking advantage of the process. 

Responding to the queries of people's representatives, Secretary at Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya said the agreement involving private sector in integrated waste management should be scripted clearly. 

Only collecting waste is not adequate in its management, said KMC Executive Officer Iswor Raj Poudel, adding the scientific management of the processing of the waste collected and policy of the KMC to that end would be important. 

Chief Executive Officer of the Board Maha Prasad Adhikari said though there are some achievements on the sustainable collection and management of wastes of late much are yet to be done to that end. 

Also speaking on the occasion, executive officers of Gokarneswor municipality and Kageswori Manohara municipality also stressed the need to explore ideas to sustainably manage the wastes collected in different parts of the Kathmandu Valley.
