Building confinement shelter for rhinos to be translocated to China begins

Ratnagar, Chitwan - Work to construct a confinement shelter has started in Chitwan National Park to keep two pairs of one-horned rhinos meant to translocate to China. 

The translocation will take place as per a decision taken by the government in 2073 B.S. to gift two pairs of rhinos to China to conduct a study on rhino conservation there. 

Earlier some days ago, officials of the government and Chinese government struck an agreement in this regard. 

The 30 meters long and 20 meters wide confinement will be fenced by concrete walls in all the four directions and roofed with a mesh. The location for the construction is inside a forest in the CNP near Sauraha. A special ditch will be dug wherein fodder will be put for the rhinos to eat, said Chief of the CNP's east sector and assistant conservation officer Abhinaya Pathak. 

A rhino is required to keep in confinement at least for one month before its translocation, and confining a rhino before its translocation helps it to get adapted to a new environment, he said. 

Director General of the CNP and Wildlife Department Man Bahadur Khadka informed that the translocation will take place within next three to four months. The rhinos will be kept in the Chimelong Safari Park and Shanghai Wild Animal Park after their translocation.
