Suicide cases up in lockdown

Kathmandu - A total of 2,218 persons took their lives in the COVID-19 lockdown across the country. The suicide number was recorded from March 24 to July 19, according to Nepal Police Headquarters. Among those committing suicide, most are men (1,172), followed by women (811), boys (94) and girls (141).

Most of them- 1,828 committed suicide by hanging, while 346 consumed poison, 19 fell off cliff, 12 drowned, eight used weapon, four burnt and one electrocuted to finish their lives. Central Spokesperson of Nepal Police, DIG Niraj Bahadur Shahi, argued that mental stress is the major cause behind the suicide.

"In order to minimize the suicide, the Nepal Police has been providing counselling to the people with the coordination of Mental Health Department of TU Teaching Hospital and various health organizations," he added.
