Turkish parliament speaker resigns to run for Istanbul mayoral

ANKARA– Turkish Parliament Speaker Binali Yildirim resigned from his post late on Monday to run for mayor of Istanbul, said the official website of the parliament.

"It was a pleasure for the last seven months working with our lawmakers who are representing the will of our people. I tried to rule the parliament without discriminating any political party group and in a way based on compromise," Yildirim said while hosting lawmakers at a farewell dinner in the parliament.

He will run for the mayor of Istanbul as the candidate of ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).
After his resignation, there will be five days for his application as a candidate. The Turkish parliament will see an election for the parliament speaker, most probably on Feb. 24 or 25. Enditem
