Pohiva Tu'i'onetoa elected Tonga's new PM

SUVA–Pohiva Tu'i'onetoa, Tonga's minister of finance, was elected on Friday as the new prime minister to replace the late prime minister of Akilisi Pohiva who passed away on Sept. 12, local media reported.

According to Matangi Tonga Online, the island nation's leading news website, Tu'i'onetoa was elected on Friday by 23 elected members of the Tongan Parliament.The election process was called by the Speaker of the House Lord Fakafanua under the new system of government that was introduced in 2010.

Tu'I'onetoa will go through the process of nominating his new cabinet ministers. He is expected to complete the term in office of the government of the late Pohiva, until the next parliamentary election in 2021.
