Speaker Mahara calls for expediting rebuild of Gorkha Palace

Gorkha–Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara has urged the stakeholders concerned not to delay the rebuilding of the historic Gorkha Palace.

Speaker Mahara who reached there this morning to take stock of the ongoing reconstruction works said he noticed a lack of enthusiastic progress in the work, calling on the people concerned to expedite the scale of the construction. In his views, the sluggish progress in the rebuilding efforts would affect the local tourism as well.

Tourist arrival from home and abroad may be hit by the delay in reinstating the monument of historic importance. He emphasised the need for preserving original structures while rebuilding the palace, seeking a collaborative effort from the three-tier government to protect and promote the palace which according to him would help boost up the district’s tourism. Meanwhile, Speaker Mahara today visited the Gorkha Durbar Museum today itself.

He observed the objects including (traditional) weapons used by the then king Prithvi Narayan Shah during the unification process of modern Nepal, said Gorkha Palace’s protection section’s information officer Rameshwor Kattel.

The Speaker is accompanied by House of Representatives’ members, Jaypuri Gharti, Hari Raj Adhikari, former lawmaker Krishna Dhital and Gorkha’s Chief District Officer Gajendra Bahadur Shrestha.

The Speaker who arrived here Thursday to attend a programme organised at Barpak in commemoration of the fourth anniversary of the Gorkha earthquake that struck the country on April 25, 2015 with its epicenter at Barpak. Approximately 9,000 people were killed and 22,000 others injured in the tragedy. He is returning to the central capital today. ---
