UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer Resigns

Kathmandu. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation from both his post and the leadership of the Labour Party.

Speaking to the nation outside 10 Downing Street on Wednesday, he announced his resignation. During the address, Starmer clarified that all decisions he made while in office were made with his beloved country as the first priority.

Prime Minister Starmer stated that the question of whether he was the right person to lead the party in the upcoming general election had arisen within the party, and he has decided to step down, accepting the answer to that question in good faith. Recalling that he found the party in a very weak political and economic state when he took office in July 2024, he claimed to have strengthened the party under his leadership.

He specifically mentioned eradicating anti-Semitism within the party and re-establishing public trust in the economy and national security.

Before formally announcing his resignation, Starmer discussed his decision with King Charles at Buckingham Palace. A schedule has been set for the nomination process for the new Labour Party leadership to open from July 9 and to be completed before the parliamentary summer recess. The goal is to elect a new leader before Parliament resumes in September. Until then, Starmer will remain as Prime Minister.

During the address, Prime Minister Starmer appeared quite emotional. He thanked his wife Victoria, calling her his strong foundation, and said he wanted to be the best father for his children.

With Starmer's departure, the race for the new leadership of the Labour Party has begun.
