Windstorm Damages Ready-to-Harvest Paddy in Nawalpur

Nawalpur. In Baguan and Siseni areas of Binayi Triveni Rural Municipality-1, Nawalpur, windstorm with rain has caused significant damage to the ready-to-harvest paddy crop. In Baguan and Siseni areas, 63 households have been affected by the windstorm, and the Chaite paddy, which was ready for harvest, has become wet in the fields.

Mina BK, who has been living in the Baguan area for the past 50 years, said that the paddy cut and kept for harvest in the field got wet, and the windstorm also blew off the roof of her house, wetting the paddy, rice, and clothes.

"The paddy planted in five katthas was cut and I was making bundles when suddenly a windstorm with rain occurred," she said. "I somehow managed to bring the paddy from the field into a heap and reached home. At home, the wind blew off the tin roof. Fortunately, my life was saved."

According to Sanjay Dhakal, an agricultural economist at the District Agriculture Development Office, paddy kept in the fields in the Baguan area, covering about seven bighas, has been damaged. Although most farmers have already harvested their paddy, about 30 percent of the paddy is still in the fields, which has been damaged, he said.

Similarly, in the Siseni area, about 5 bighas of harvested paddy have been 50 percent damaged, while 35 bighas of unharvested paddy crop have been affected by hail and rain, Dhakal informed.

According to Ghanshyam Giri, Chairman of Binayi Triveni Rural Municipality, the damage caused by the windstorm that occurred on Tuesday is estimated to be around 2.5 million rupees.

In Siseni, 23, in Baguan, 40, in Jyogikuti, 1, in Tallo Jamire, 7, and in Purano Basti, 2, a total of 73 households have been affected. The roofs of the houses of the affected families have been blown off, and there has been damage to food grains, clothes, and other materials. He said that the rural municipality is collecting details of the damage and preparing to provide necessary relief and assistance.
