Energy Ministry Invites Applications for Electricity Regulatory Commission Officials

Kathmandu. The Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation has invited applications for the vacant posts of officials in the Electricity Regulatory Commission through open competition.< p>

Issuing a public notice on Thursday, the ministry has sought applications from qualified and interested individuals for the posts of one chairman and four members of the commission.< p>

The ministry has stated that one of the four member posts has been secured for women. The ministry has mentioned that the appointment process is being carried forward in accordance with Section 5 of the Electricity Regulatory Commission Act, 2074.< p>

Interested candidates must meet the minimum educational qualifications and experience specified in the Act. Interested individuals must submit their applications to the Development Assistance and Technical Coordination Division under the ministry within 15 days from the date of publication of the notice.< p>

Previously, the commission became without leadership after the chairman and four members were automatically removed from their posts in accordance with the 'Special Arrangement Ordinance on Removal from Public Office, 2083'. The government has since moved forward with the process of selecting new leadership.< p>

For this, the Minister of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, has formed a three-member recommendation committee through a ministerial decision. The committee, chaired by the ministry's secretary Chiranjivi Chataut, includes joint secretary Sagar Raj Gautam and energy expert Satish Narayan Joshi as members.< p>

Stating that the need now is not just electricity production but its transformation into prosperity through effective market and sustainable regulation, Minister Shrestha said that Nepal has entered a new phase of the electricity sector.< p>

He said that the commission's role is directly linked to tariff determination, consumer protection, sustainability of service providers, and promotion of long-term investment. He stated that leadership capable of structuring the energy market to encompass everything from rural kitchens in Karnali to industrial areas in the Terai and cross-border electricity trade is needed.< p>

Minister Shrestha clarified that the government is serious about the independent role and mandate of the commission and stated that the commission's analysis and suggestions will guide the ministry's policy decisions. The minister said that the government is looking for highly capable individuals and that those who understand the energy sector closely should compete.< p>

“Regulation in Nepal is not about managing the status quo, but about building the structure of an emerging electricity economy. We are looking for women and men who have both technical depth and policy vision, and who have the capacity to solve the questions that will define the next decade of our energy future,” said Minister Shrestha.< p>
