UN Proposes New Global Dashboard for Inclusive, Balanced, and Sustainable Development Assessment

Kathmandu. The United Nations has proposed a new global 'dashboard' to assess the development of countries around the world in a more inclusive, balanced, and sustainable manner. The proposal aims to include the standard of living of citizens, social conditions, equality, and environmental protection as important bases for development, along with Gross Domestic Product.

The report titled 'Measuring Progress for People and Planet' was released by an independent high-level expert group of the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres. The report gives equal importance to human welfare, social justice, and environmental sustainability along with economic growth.

Secretary-General Guterres mentioned that although Gross Domestic Product is an important indicator of economic progress, it cannot fully reflect the overall condition of society. He stated that it is necessary to respectfully include issues such as inequality, poverty, health, education, peace, and environmental protection in the assessment of development.

According to the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, the proposed dashboard includes 31 indicators, which are expected to present a detailed and balanced picture of economic, social, and environmental conditions. It also includes the capacity of society to face disasters and crises.

Co-chair of the expert group, Nora Lustig, expressed the view that Gross Domestic Product cannot adequately cover sensitive aspects such as inequality, poverty, and environmental damage. Another co-chair, Kaushik Basu, mentioned that development is not just economic growth but also a positive improvement in education, health, arts, culture, and the standard of living of citizens.

According to the United Nations, Gross Domestic Product has been used as the main basis for policy formulation for a long time. However, it is stated that relying solely on this can affect the environment, security, and quality of life, even if the economy grows.

This report is believed to help governments formulate effective policies by prioritizing inclusive development, sustainability, and public welfare. It also points out the need to view development not just as economic achievement but by connecting it with the quality of human life and the protection of nature.
