National Disaster Risk Reduction Authority Directs Strict Closure of High-Risk Roadways

Kathmandu. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority has directed all district administration offices to strictly close vehicular movement on sensitive road sections identified as high-risk to ensure the safety of passengers and vehicles. The Authority has also stated that drivers and vehicle owners who defy the closure of traffic in risky areas will be brought under strict legal action. On Monday evening, five vehicles that proceeded forward despite being stopped due to the rising water levels of the Roshi River in Kavre district and potential risks, resulted in passengers being stranded in the flood. All 89 passengers stranded in the flood were safely rescued. Following serious questions raised about passenger safety due to the actions of some drivers, the Authority requested that vehicular movement be strictly closed as needed after analyzing the local situation and road risk conditions, informed Deputy Secretary of the Authority, Rambadur K.C. To prevent incidents like the Roshi River from recurring, the Authority has also asked to identify road sections sensitive to disaster risk and coordinate with all concerned bodies in a timely manner to reduce risks. Similarly, it has been directed to prepare and implement plans to keep stranded and at-risk passengers safe in the event of road blockades and traffic closures during disasters. The Authority has also requested compliance with weather forecasts from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, and the early warnings and information issued by the Authority according to those forecasts.
