T20 World Cup Enters Super 8 Stage: Teams and Fixtures Confirmed

The T20 World Cup currently underway in India and Sri Lanka has entered its decisive phase. Group stage matches are nearly complete, and the teams advancing to the 'Super 8' have been finalized.

Pakistan became the last team to qualify from the group stage after securing a resounding victory over Namibia in Colombo on Wednesday.

Now, Pakistan will compete in the next stage against defending champions India, co-hosts Sri Lanka, West Indies, England, South Africa, New Zealand, and Zimbabwe.

Here is a breakdown of how the 8 teams advanced from the group stage and who will play whom in the Super 8:

Group A

Defending champions India secured their spot in the Super 8 with a comfortable 61-run victory over their rivals Pakistan. With that loss, Pakistan dropped to third place, severely impacting their net run-rate.

However, Pakistan managed to secure the second spot in Group A after achieving a massive 102-run victory over Namibia in their final match. Before the final round of games, the USA was in second place, but Pakistan's win relegated them to third place.

This result rendered the final match between the Netherlands and co-hosts India inconsequential. Namibia exited the tournament after losing all four of their matches.

Group B

Sri Lanka secured their place in the next round with a magnificent 8-wicket victory over Australia. Zimbabwe also advanced to the next round after their match against Ireland was washed out by rain.

Following an unexpected defeat against Zimbabwe, Australia needed Ireland to defeat Zimbabwe to stay alive in the tournament, but since the match could not take place due to rain, Australia was eliminated. Ireland, which secured 3 points, and Oman were also eliminated.

Group C

West Indies confirmed their journey to the next round after a 9-wicket victory over Nepal on Sunday. England also secured their spot on Monday with a 24-run victory over Italy. Scotland, Italy, and Nepal were eliminated from this group.

Group D

Undefeated South Africa qualified as group winners after defeating the UAE on Wednesday. New Zealand secured their place in the next round with an 8-wicket victory over Canada.

Afghanistan, United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Canada, who finished at the bottom of Group 'D', were eliminated.

What is the Super 8 Format?

The top two teams from each group (A through D) have advanced to the Super 8, which will feature two groups of 4 teams each.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) had pre-determined the Super 8 groups if 8 seeded teams qualified:

Group X: India (X1), Australia (X2), West Indies (X3), South Africa (X4)
Group Y: England (Y1), New Zealand (Y2), Pakistan (Y3), Sri Lanka (Y4)

The rule was that if any of these teams failed to qualify, the qualifying team would take their seeding. Since Australia failed to qualify, Zimbabwe took Australia's spot (X2).

In the Super 8 stage, each team will play three matches, one against every other team in their group. After those matches, the top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, the winner of one group will play the runner-up of the other group.
