Sri Lanka Edges Out Ireland by 20 Runs in T20 World Cup Opener

Kathmandu. Sri Lanka has made a winning start in the T20 World Cup 2026 by defeating Ireland. Although the match was not entirely easy, Sri Lanka managed a 20-run victory.

Batting first, Sri Lanka struggled until the 16th over. However, contributions from Kamindu Mendis, who scored 44 runs off 19 balls, and an unbeaten 56 from Kusal Mendis helped the team post a total of 163 runs for the loss of 6 wickets.

Chasing the target of 164 runs, Ireland had a good start. Ireland appeared to be in a strong position when Hasaranga experienced an injury issue while bowling. However, despite being injured, Hasaranga took three crucial wickets. Maheesh Theekshana also dismantled the Irish innings by taking three wickets.

Ireland was bowled out for 143 runs in 19.5 overs, missing a good opportunity for victory. With this win, Sri Lanka secured two important points.
