HoR election: 81 days to go: EC gearing up for polls

Kathmandu, Dec 14: With just 81 days remaining until the House of Representatives election, the Election Commission is gearing up for the polls. The Commission has successfully completed the registration of parties for both direct (first-past-the-post (FPTP) and proportional representation.

The government has also made essential arrangements to facilitate the election process. Political parties are ramping up their election efforts, creating a palpable sense of an impending election atmosphere across the nation.

Political activities are on the rise, with both major and emerging parties launching election-centric campaigns throughout the country. The Election Commission has initiated the process of calculating the proportional representation percentages based on population for the upcoming elections scheduled for March 5. These percentages are being established for various groups, including Dalit, indigenous, ethnic, Khas Arya, Madhesi, Tharu, and Muslim communities, in accordance with the House of Representatives constituency arrangements.

In total, one hundred political parties are expected to engage in the proportional representation system. On Friday, the Election Commission registered these political parties and assigned them election symbols. Among the parties that applied to participate in the proportional representation elections during the three-day window of December 7, 8 and 9, a total of one hundred were ultimately confirmed.

Although one hundred parties submitted applications for this election system, only 93 unique election symbols were established due to multiple parties applying for the same symbol. Additionally, 114 political parties are set to take part in the direct elections. The Commission is currently drafting the election code of conduct and is in the process of gathering necessary feedback.
