Minister Thapa seeks NRCS's role in women's empowerment

 

 

Biratnagar – Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens, Thammaya Thapa, has said the Red Cross should focus on issues of public health and disaster management. 


Inaugurating the 47th General Convention of Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) here today, the Minister sought the NRCS's effective role in empowering and improving economic status of women especially of those facing social exclusion. She insisted that new amendment to the NRCS statute should be women-friendly and the organisation's leading role was expected in minimizing violence against women and harmful practices against them such as dowry system, chhaupadi, child marriage and belief on witchery. 
He took the time to call on the NRCS not to give its membership to those involved in women violence. 


Biratnagar Metropolitan City Office Mayor Bhim Parajuli suggested the NRCS for the operation of a Blood Transfusion Center in rural areas so as to avert any possibility of human death in lack of blood supply there. 


Over 300 representatives from various ministries, Social Welfare Council, Nepal Red Cross Society, International Committee of the Red Cross and International Federation of the Red Cross are taking part in the two-day convention. ---
