Deadly Fire Ravages Iraqi Shopping Mall, Killing 60

A devastating fire at a newly opened shopping center in Kut, Iraq, has claimed at least 60 lives, according to local authorities. The blaze erupted Wednesday night in the Corniche Hypermarket, located in the city center about 100 miles southeast of Baghdad, and was eventually contained after hours of firefighting efforts.

Rescue Efforts and Casualties
Disturbing social media footage captured firefighters evacuating people from the rooftop as flames engulfed multiple floors. While some were successfully rescued, many remain unaccounted for. The interior ministry confirmed 61 fatalities, with 14 victims burned beyond recognition and numerous others succumbing to smoke inhalation in restrooms.

Eyewitness Accounts
Dr. Nasir al-Quraishi, who lost five family members, described the horror: "We came to escape power outages at home when an air conditioner explosion triggered the fire, trapping us." Medical sources report over 50 fatalities, with identification efforts ongoing for severely burned victims.

Official Response
Governor Mohammed al-Miyahi declared the incident "a shocking tragedy," promising legal action against the mall's owners and a comprehensive safety review. The hypermarket had been operational for merely five days before the disaster. Investigators are working to determine the fire's cause, with initial findings anticipated within 48 hours.

Ambulances continued transporting victims to local hospitals until early morning, as the community mourns one of Iraq's worst commercial fire disasters in recent memory.
