Nepal Army calls for adaptation of security strategy amid geopolitical tensions

Kathmandu, February 23 — The Nepal Army has concluded that the country's security strategy and coordination systems need to be adapted to changing circumstances, as international developments could affect Nepal as well.
This conclusion was drawn from the Brigadier General Coordination Meeting held on Thursday and Friday, according to military officials.
After the meeting, the Army held a press conference and released its semi-annual progress report.
During the press conference held at the Army Headquarters on Sunday, Deputy Chief of the Department of Milityary Operations, Major General Prem Dhoj Adhikari, stated that the geopolitical situation would have an impact on Nepal, and that the military is contemplating how to proceed in light of this.
He mentioned, "We are currently reflecting on how to move forward."
The recent tensions between the U.S. and Ukraine have created new security challenges, and the Army's conclusion suggests that similar challenges could arise.
Military spokesperson (Brigadier General) Gaurav Kumar KC mentioned that they are studying international activities and their potential impacts.
Addressing the opening of the Brigadier General Coordination Meeting on February 8, Defense Minister Manbir Rai had emphasized that ongoing conflicts in various parts of the world would also affect Nepal in one way or another.
He said, "We need to study the challenges posed by climate change and artificial intelligence in depth."
The meeting was attended by the heads of various military departments, directorates, and Brigadiers.
The discussions focused on issues such as soldier welfare, training improvements, and other challenges facing the Army, as noted by military spokesperson KC.
He mentioned, "The meeting covered a variety of issues related to the Army's problems and challenges."
In his address, Chief of Army Staff Ashok Raj Sigdel stated that the global security situation has become more sensitive, complex, and uncertain from a multi-dimensional perspective.
He warned that internal and external changes could create new security challenges, and stressed the importance of analyzing and adapting strategies and coordination systems to effectively address these future security threats.
