MPs suggest reducing public holidays to improve service delivery

Kathmandu, December 12 — Members of Parliament have urged the government to reduce the number of public holidays in Nepal.

During a meeting of the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee held at Singha Durbar on Thursday, MPs expressed concerns that the high number of holidays hampers smooth public service delivery.

MP Amresh Kumar Singh recommended that holidays should not exceed 30 days per year, as excessive holidays delay work and create problems for the public.

The committee also discussed the Federal Civil Service Act, with MPs emphasizing that giving holidays too frequently hinders timely completion of tasks.

MP Shyam Ghimire suggested that government employees should be recruited only from higher levels, and policies should be introduced for lower-level recruitment from private companies.

Additionally, MP Madhav Sapkota expressed dissatisfaction over the late notification of the meeting, stating that he would not participate in the discussions due to inadequate preparation.

Committee chair Ram Hari Khatiwada responded that delays in sending notifications were due to the continuous nature of the meetings, and assured that the committee is actively working on legislative matters.
