Dispute resolved: Ranjita and Resham remain co-chairs of Nagarik Unmukti
Kathmandu, September 25 — The dispute between Ranjita Shrestha, chairperson of the Nagarik Unmukti Party, and founding leader Resham Lal Chaudhary has been resolved. Following their agreement, a central committee meeting has been scheduled for October 4 and 5 with joint signatures.
Both will continue as co-chairs of the party. Resham Lal Chaudhary was elected chairman during the first general convention, but his chairmanship became controversial due to a complaint filed with the Election Commission. As a result, Ranjita Shrestha declared herself chairperson.
The disagreement over the chairpersonship escalated to the point of physical altercations between their supporters at the party office. Since then, the party has been divided into two factions, with Chaudhary asserting his position as the chair elected from the convention and Shrestha claiming her role as chair.
Both factions displayed their influence across the provinces and the center. When one faction decided to join the government, the other chose to withdraw, leading to actions taken against each other's leaders and activists.
After a prolonged dispute, an agreement was reached between the two, according to a party official.
Due to ongoing legal proceedings regarding the chair elected at the general convention, it was agreed that Ranjita Shrestha would sign documents as chairperson while Resham Chaudhary would manage the remaining responsibilities.
Chaudhary stated, "An agreement has been reached. Now, we have decided to move forward together to build the party."
He noted that the upcoming central committee meeting would focus on organizational restructuring and strengthening.
Chaudhary emphasized that there is currently no dispute within the party, saying, "There were some disagreements that seemed like a dispute, but they were not. Now everything has been resolved. The party will move forward in an organized and united manner."
He added that the meeting, previously postponed due to internal conflicts, will reconvene, with all central members and officials elected from the general convention, as well as the legally recognized chairperson from the Election Commission, in attendance.
