Martyr Day commemorated nationwide: Tributes paid to fallen heroes, amidst concerns of unfulfilled dreams
KATHMANDU: Martyr Day is being commemorated today with various events taking place across the country to honor those who sacrificed their lives for the nation.
The day holds significance as it pays tribute to individuals who fought for liberty, freedom, and democracy in Nepal. Week-long programs, observed from Magh 10 to 16 annually, serve as a commemoration to these martyrs.
The tradition of organizing programs in honor of the martyrs dates back to 2012 BS, initiated by the Kathmandu municipality, and continues to this day.
Notable individuals who made significant contributions to the cause of democracy and civic rights, such as Shukra Raj Shastri, Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Ganga Lal Shrestha, and Dasharath Chanda, were martyred during the struggle.
Shukra Raj Shastri was executed in Pachali, Kathmandu on Magh 10, 1997, followed by Dharma Bhakta Mathema at Siphal, Kathmandu on Magh 13, and Ganga Lal Shrestha and Dasharath Chanda at Shova Bhagawati, Kathmandu on Magh 15 of the same year.
To mark the occasion, a morning rally is scheduled from Shanti Batika, Ratnapark to Lainchaur.
The Kathmandu Metropolis has confirmed the participation of the Prime Minister, ministers, high-ranking officials of the Nepal government, and a march-past by security bodies.
The event will culminate with the paying of tributes to both known and unknown martyrs at the Martyrs' Monument in Lainchaur.
Despite the commemorations, there is growing public concern that the aspirations of the martyrs remain unfulfilled.
The collective dream of those who sacrificed their lives for the nation is perceived to be unrealized, prompting a reflection on the ongoing struggles for democracy and civic rights in Nepal.
