Road accidents in Kathmandu Valley: 88 fatal deaths recorded in past six months

KATHMANDU: With road accidents claiming the lives of 88 individuals and causing injuries to thousands in the Kathmandu Valley during the first six months of the current fiscal year, the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office is stepping up its efforts to address the alarming situation.

Senior Superintendent of Police Rajendra Prasad Bhatta, spokesperson of the Traffic Police Office, highlighted the multifaceted approach being implemented to enhance road safety.

"Our ongoing initiatives include targeted awareness programs, strict enforcement of rules prohibiting vehicles from exceeding 50 kilometers per hour, and thorough inspections of vehicles, with a focus on long-distance travel and the presence of two drivers," he explained.

Punya Prasad (Saroj) Sitaula, Senior Vice-President of the National Federation of Nepal Transport Entrepreneurs, emphasized the need to address the specific challenges faced by motorcyclists and pedestrians.

"The combination of high speeds on motorcycles and scooters, along with pedestrians crossing roads haphazardly, has resulted in a concerning number of fatalities in Kathmandu," he stated.

As authorities work towards creating a safer road environment, the community is urged to adhere to traffic regulations and actively participate in fostering a culture of responsible road behavior.
