Sandeep Lamichhane convicted in rape case steps down from National Cricket Team

KATHMANDU: Cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane, who has been handed eight years of jail sentence after found guilty in a rape case, has announced to step down from the National Cricket Team.

Lamichhane after the Kathmandu District Court sentenced him to an 8-year prison term wrote to the Cricket Association Nepal (CAN) informing that he will not be a part of the national team, according a source at CAN. 

Urging to acknowledge his decision, Lamichhane has informed the association that he will be appealing against the verdict in the high court and will join the team if declared innocent.

The Kathmandu District Court sentenced cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane, accused of rape, to an 8-year prison term on Wednesday. 

Judge Shishir Raj Dhakal’s verdict also mandated him to compensate the victim with a sum of 500,000 rupees.
