Rabi Lamichhane re-acquires Nepali citizenship

KATHMANDU, Jan 29: Rabi Lamichhane, former Home Minister and Chairperson of Rastriya Swatantra Party, re-acquired his Nepali citizenship on Sunday from the District Administration, Kathmandu.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had declared Lamichhane’s Nepali citizenship illegal conducting a hearing of the case filed against Lamichhane by advocates Rabi Raj Basaula and Yubaraj Poudel accusing him of using citizenship and passport of the United States of America (USA) without quitting the citizenship and passport of Nepal.
Lamichhane had earlier acquired Nepali citizenship in 2050 Falgun 10 from DAO, Kathmandu. According to the DAO, Lamichhane’s citizenship number is 18222. Likewise, Lamichhane had also acquired American citizenship in 2014 February 21. He however had not informed the Government of Nepal about him being an American citizen. Lamichhane has been accused of using American citizenship and passport along with Nepali citizenship and passport at once.
Later after news of Lamichhane using dual citizenship flooded the social media and made it to the public domain, Lamichhane had filed an application at the American Embassy on 2075 Jestha 4 to quit his american citizenship. Then after 40 days, he had informed the general public that he quitted his American citizenship through his social media post.
According to the apex court, Lamichhane failed to inform the Government authorities and was found not fulfilling the process of reacquisition of Nepali citizenship and declared his Nepali citizenship illegal and scrapped his parliamentary post.
