Why is PM Deuba seeking support of CK Raut and Resam Chaudhary?

KATHMANDU, Dec 14: Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba recently introduced an ordinance that will open doors for Resam Chaudhary and others to escape from jail.

This move of PM Deuba has been largely criticized not only by the opposition parties but also leaders from the Nepali Congress itself.

Following the general election, the parties are busy preparing to form a new government. Insiders believe that the PM Deuba has introduced the ordinance in order to win support from Raut and Chaudhary to form a new government.

The Nagarik Unmukti Party-led by Ranjita Shrestha, wife of Resam Chaudhary won four seats in the election of the House of Representatives. Likewise, the Janamat Party-led by CK Raut won six seats in the election of HoR. Jointly, these two parties have secured 10 seats in the parliament which many believe is the reason why PM Deuba wants them free from jail.

PM Deuba needs the support of as many as 138 members of HoR. The ruling alliance currently has two seats to form a new government. It has been learnt that Dr Prabhu Shah and Dr Amresh Kumar Singh, independent candidates who were elected the member of the HoR, have already announced their support for the ruling alliance.

Similarly, the Janata Samajbadi Party is also likely to join hands with the ruling alliance once again. Apart from that, the Rastriya Prajatantra Party has won 14 seats and the Rastriya Swatantra Party has won 20 seats. These two parties can also join the government. However, PM Deuba has done very little to make these parties join him.

Also, political analysts maintain that PM Deuba is on the run to form a majority government.
