NC General Convention: Presidential aspirants without  formidable team

The ruling Nepali Congress (NC) is holding its 14th General Convention in November, later this year. Nearly a dozen leaders are in the race for the presidential position in the party.

Sher Bahadur Deuba, Ram Chandra Poudel, Shashank Koirala, Gopal Man Shrestha, Bimalendra Nidhi, Prakash Man Singh, Shekhar Koirala, Sujata Koirala and Kalyan Gurung are reportedly preparing to vie for the post of president.

However, most leaders vying for the presidential position have apparently failed to form their own team, meaning they resemble ‘a general without an army’.

Arjun Narsingh KC and Dr Ram Sharan Mahat are also preparing to lock their horns for the topmost position in the party. Krishna Prasad Sitaula, on the other hand, has also expedited his preparations to field himself as the presidential position representing the ‘third camp’ in the party.

NC’s party statute has a provision of 13 office bearers including president. Except for President Deuba, who is also the prime minister, those preparing to vie for the presidential post will find it difficult to build a team of 13 promising candidates.

The 13 key positions include a president, two vice presidents, two general secretaries, eight deputy general secretaries. Similarly, the treasurer and spokesperson will be nominated by the president.

In case 12 aspirants vie for the presidential position, at least 156 candidates are required. It means the present number of 126-member working committee will not suffice.
