EC says Maoist Center is legitimate party
KATHMANDU, July 11: The Election Commission (EC) has decided that the legitimacy of the CPN (Maoist Center) will remain intact.
Hearing the petition filed by advocate Saroj Budhathoki, as planned by the former Maoist leaders, the poll body dismissed the claims made by the petitioner that the party is illegitimate.
Advocate Budhathoki filed a petition at the commission on July 7 and asked the latter for the revocation of the party.
Leaders including Prabhu Shah, Mani Thapa and Gaurishankar Chaudhari, who joined the CPN-UML after the erstwhile NCP was invalidated, reached the poll body on Friday under the leadership of Top Bahadur Rayamajhi. Meanwhile, Lekhraj Bhatta , who also sought the invalidation of the Maoist party, didn’t join them due to health issues.
Shah, Thapa Bhatta and Chaudhari were elected through the FPTP electoral system in 2017 general elections on behalf of the Maoist party.
A five-member bench presided by Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Thapaliya decided that the party is still legitimate. Other members of the bench include the election commissioners Ishwari Prasad Poudel, Ram Prasad Bhandari, Janaki Kumari Tuladhar and Sagun Shumsher JBR.
