These are aspirants of NC’s presidential position, Deuba being challenged by leaders close to him
KATHMANDU, June 24: The number of aspirants for the presidential position of the Nepali Congress (NC) is on the rise as the party’s 14th General Convention is drawing closer.
The leaders ranging from the first generation including the serving President Sher Bahadur Deuba and senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba to those belonging to the second generation [Bimalendra Nidhi, Prakash Man Singh, Shekhar Koirala and Sujata Koirala] are also staking their claims for the party’s presidential position. Similarly, Gopal Man Shrestha and Krishna Prasad Sitaula, other leaders of the second generation are also reportedly preparing to vie for the position.
Meanwhile, Kalyan Gurung, a leader belonging to the third generation has also laid claim for the party’s supreme post. Gurung’s father, Basant Gurung, had begun his political career along with President Deuba.
As the party’s convention approaches closer, new aspirants have been emerging. The party is scheduled to hold its 14th General Convention from September 1 to 4 later this year.
Deuba being challenged by leaders close to his faction
Sher Bahadur Deuba, 76, who had served as the prime minister for four times and taken charge of the party's leadership for three different terms is also preparing to contest for the presidential post.
Leaders close to him, however, have been exerting pressure on him to take a rest and hand over the responsibility to the second generation. Party’s vice-president Nidhi and leader Shrestha have announced that they would vie for the post in the upcoming convention,
