Press Union celebrates its anniversary through zoom technology

Kathmandu - Nepal Press Union has celebrated its 29th anniversary through the medium of zoom technology. The anniversary was celebrated through zoom as lockdown has been in place in the country to prevent and control coronavirus infection spreading across the globe.

Around 200 people including leaders of the Nepali Congress, office-bearers and former Presidents of the Federation of Nepali Journalists, Nepal Press Union’s former presidents, office-bearers, central committee members and districts presidents had participated in the programme where Nepali Congress President and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, was chief guest.

Saying the role of media sector has further increased to make people aware about this difficult hour caused by coronavirus pandemic, NC Spokesperson and Chief of Information, Communication and Publicity Department Bishwo Prakash Sharma said that it was the need of hour to make media sector and journalists safe and strong. Chairperson of Nepal Trade Union Congress, Puskar Acharya, demanded the government to immediately make arrangement of relief for working journalists, workers and employees facing different problems in this difficult hour.

Similarly, FNJ Chairperson Govinda Acharya shared that the union has been advocating in favour of working journalists since its establishment and expressed belief that the FNJ would move ahead collaborating with Press Union in common issues of media freedom and rights. NPU central president Badri Sigdel expressed deep respect to the journalists who are taking up their responsibilities in the frontline risking their lives in the critical time of COVID-19 pandemic.

He also called for the government to bring special relief package for media sector and workers. A gathering of democratic journalists on the same day (Jetha 13) in 2048 BS had established the NPU to get united and organized to work for professional security and integrity of media sector.
