Former Kathmandu Mayor PL Singh cremated

Kathmandu, December 16 — The former Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Premlal (PL) Singh, was cremated today according to Newar traditions.

The cremation took place at Lakhathirth in Ward 15 of the metropolitan city, as informed by the spokesperson of the municipality and Ward 17 Chair, Navin Manandhar. Singh's brother, Indralal Singh, performed the last rites and lit the funeral pyre.

The cremation was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Urban Development, Prakashman Singh, Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, Badri Prasad Pandey, Minister for Social Development of Bagmati Province, Hariprabha Khadgi Shrestha, Deputy Mayor of Kathmandu, Sunita Dangol, as well as ward chairpersons, executive members, and members of the municipal assembly.

The 88-year-old Singh, a former central committee member of the Nepali Congress, former Minister for Population and Environment, and former Mayor of Kathmandu, passed away at 1:00 AM last night in Chaksibari, Kathmandu.

Late Singh had worked closely with the prominent leader Ganeshman Singh for many years.

During Nepal’s democratic movement, Singh was imprisoned multiple times and was even exiled to India.

After the restoration of democracy, he was elected as the first Mayor of Kathmandu in the 1992 local elections, representing the Nepali Congress.
