Sirjana Danuwar elected Deputy Speaker of Province 1

BIRATNAGAR, Jan. 14: 46-year-old Srijana Danuwar of CPN-UML has been elected to the post of Deputy Speaker of Province 1. Danuwar received 57 votes in the Deputy Speaker election process held at the State Assembly Secretariat. 33 votes were cast in favor of not voting for her as the deputy speaker. 90 MPs participated in the voting. Narayan Burjamagar, state MP of the Maoist Center, was the proponent of Danuwar and Sabija Bajgain of RPP was the supporter.
There are 93 members in the Provincial Assembly, including 40 from the UML, 29 from the Congress, 13 from the CPN Maoist Center, 6 from the RPP, 4 from the CPN United Socialist Party, and 1 from JSP. The ruling coalition UML, Maoist, RPP and JSP have 60 votes. Although the Speaker remained neutral, two UML MPs remained absent. Meanwhile, 33 votes were cast in favor of Nepali Congress MP Leela Kumari Rai in the first round of elections for the post of Deputy Speaker. Speaker Baburam Gautam announced that Rai was defeated as Deputy Speaker after 57 votes were cast against her.
Danuwar, who was elected as the deputy speaker, was elected from Udaipur through a proportional quota. In clause (1) of Article 182 of the Constitution, the members of the Provincial Assembly should elect the Deputy Speaker of the Provincial Assembly within 15 days from the date of commencement of the first meeting of the Provincial Assembly. In clause (2) of article 182 of the constitution, in accordance with clause (1), during the election, one of the Provincial Assembly Speaker or Provincial Deputy Speaker should be a woman, and the Provincial Assembly Speaker or Provincial Deputy Speaker should be a representative of different parties.
According to the Provincial Assembly Rules 2074, the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker will be held separately. There is a rule that only after the election of the Speaker, the Deputy Speaker will be elected. Accordingly, the election of the Speaker has already been completed. Baburam Gautam, an MP from Okhaldhunga, has been elected unopposed as the Speaker.
