Republic, federalism; achievements of people’s movement: Shashanka Koirala

Chitwan– Nepali Congress general secretary Dr Shashanka Koirala has termed republic and federalism the achievements of people’s movement and it is the responsibility of all to protect them. 

Speaking at a programme organised by the Nepal Press Union, Chitwan chapter here today, the NC general secretary said republic and federalism are the outcomes of people’s movement and he never proposed for a referendum about this. 


He however said a people’s opinion could be collected officially over the matter of religious freedom, and there was a need for exerting public pressure on the government regarding the issue of Hindu state. 
“Religious freedom is the destination of Nepali Congress,” he stated. 


According to him, the government decision to ban the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) led by Netra Bikram Chand was wrong and a solution to the issue should be sought through talks and dialogue, instead. 


The NC general secretary alleged the government of not working in favour of the people. "The government has failed to bring effective plans and implement any policies so far," he said. 


Stating that the Nepali Congress party has also not been able to play its role as opposition party, general secretary Koirala said the country has reached the present stage due to the contribution of the party's former president the late Girija Prasad Koirala.
