Weather Department Forecasts Heatwave in Tarai, Rain in Hills

Kathmandu. According to the weather forecast released by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, some cities in the Tarai will experience extreme heat and 'hot air waves' or 'loo' today, while most places in the hilly regions are likely to experience thunderstorms and rain.

Life is expected to be further affected by the heat in the major cities of the Tarai. According to the department's data, hot air waves will blow in Nepalgunj, Simara, and Janakpur this afternoon. Nepalgunj is expected to be the hottest in the country today, with the maximum temperature predicted to reach 39 to 41 degrees Celsius.

Similarly, the maximum temperature in Simara and Janakpur will be between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius. In addition, the department has issued a warning, classifying Dhangadhi, Birendranagar, Ghorahi, Bhairahawa, and Biratnagar as 'hot days' today. Among these, the temperature in Dhangadhi and Bhairahawa is estimated to reach 38 to 40 degrees Celsius.

While there is scorching heat in the Tarai, there is a possibility of rain in the hilly and mountainous districts. The Kathmandu Valley is likely to experience thunderstorms and rain both in the afternoon and at night today. The maximum temperature in Kathmandu this afternoon is expected to be between 29 and 31 degrees Celsius, with a 20 percent chance of rain.

Similarly, Pokhara, Okhaldhunga, Dhankuta, Jiri, and Taplejung will experience moderate rain with thunderstorms this afternoon. Dadelhura, Dipayal, Jumla, and Jomsom are expected to experience light rain with thunderstorms. Dharan will only have partly cloudy skies this afternoon.

The department has stated that the possibility of rain will remain in most of the hilly cities during the night as well. Tonight, light rain will occur in Kathmandu along with Dadeldhura, Dipayal, Dhangadhi, Jumla, Okhaldhunga, and Jomsom, while moderate rain will occur in Pokhara, Dhankuta, Biratnagar, Dharan, Janakpur, Jiri, and Taplejung.

In the Tarai cities of Birendranagar, Nepalgunj, Ghorahi, Bhairahawa, and Simara, the weather will only be partly cloudy at night. Jomsom is forecast to have the lowest temperature in the country tonight, between 9 and 11 degrees Celsius.
