Twenty families displaced due to river cutting

Nepalgunj – The people of Kachanapur in Rapti Sonari rural municipality have been suffering from erosion caused by the Rapti River.

Twenty households in the area have been displaced after the river changed its course and started eroding the land near the settlement. The river has eroded around 50 bigahas of cultivable land in the area in a period of three weeks.

The entire settlement is at high risk of inundation after the river changed its course and started flowing towards the settlement, Rapti Sonari rural municipality, Ward Number 2 Chairperson, Madan Oli, said.

Oli complained that they approached various government bodies concerned including the Office of the People's Embankment Programme for construction of erosion prevention measures but to no avail.

On Tuesday, provincial assembly lawmaker from Province 5, Krishna KC, made an observation of the area. On the occasion, lawmaker KC said preparations are being made to address the problem by implementing a separate embankment construction project in the area.
